The Story of Maki Squarepatch


Maki Squarepatch is one of our pretty little kitties. This store would not have been possible without her love and her life. Maki was a baby found as a trembling mass along the highway with horrible injuries. Mom picked her up, took her home where we all took care of her, gave her lots of love and a new home with kitty and poochie pals.


The story of Maki Squarepatch is about taking discarded/untreasured items, bringing it home and giving it our special touch, and giving it a new life, a new love and a new home. With the same ideology, the motto of Maki Squarepatch is to recycle and reconstruct, for in anything that one person discards, there is somebody out there who will appreciate it and treasure it. Maki Squarepatch is about recycling any interesting materials that we can get our hands on and that we will be happy working with and recreating into something lovely and new.

This store has been open since Oct 2006.



Why the name?

Maki had to go through 2 surgeries when we brought her home and we weren’t sure whether she was going to make it. While nursing her back to health, she was always wrapped up like a Japanese maki handroll so that she will fall asleep feeling secure and safe. With 2 surgeries came 2 shaven patches on her pinkish belly, signs of victory over death. Today, she beats the other bigger cats at catching roaches and moths, and is the most agile, soft-spoken and adventurous cat we’ve ever had.



Who runs this store?

To have her own business has always been enqi’s dream and passion. She adores vintage clothes, anything kitsch, all things pink and pretty and is pretty much in her own world most of the time. She is happy when she makes jewelry and is inspired by the sea, nature, friends and whatever she can get her hands on. On a deeper level, the story of Maki Squarepatch is also about how she was broken, felt discarded and made whole again by God.


Xin is the goody doozy artist/designer here. being in art school gave her the freedom to play with different mediums, especially painting and sewing. she loves recreating new things out of old stuff such as taking apart children’s dolly dresses, boring looking men’s pants, school uniforms, jackets etc…and stitching up new creations out of materials that most people will not think twice about throwing away. she draws her inspirations from animals with weird hairstyles, the curvaceous body of their 10kg fat cat picasso, classic cartoons and discarded clothes. Xin graduated with a BA in Fine Arts and her latest exhibition was Art Sydney in Sydney, 2005 where she sold some of her paintings. Her portfolio can be viewed at www.handmadebyxin.com. This shop is based in Singapore and is more than happy to work with small businesses worldwide.

We’re up for recreating anything made out of fabric! Our one-piece items are made out of pre-loved fabrics and recreated into new usable products. This list is inexhaustible but so far we’ve created this (and more to add to the list):

Motto and Vision


We hope to see more people involved in eco-conscious efforts through reducing consume waste, reusing anything they can get their hands on and recycling whatever can be recreated to give new life. Our vision is to see a world that is more caring and conscious of eco awareness and we hope to work with likeminded individuals and companies to work towards such a goal. Our ultimate mission is to do our bit to save the world!
